Lockhart River Airport Reseal

Lockhart River is an Aboriginal community located 800km north of Cairns on the eastern coast of Queensland’s Cape York. In 2002, the Lockhart River Aerodrome Company embarked on a program to upgrade the airport to a standard suitable for operations by Dash 8 aircraft.

Airfield lighting was installed and the pavement strength rating (PCN) was evaluated by GHD. This left the only outstanding requirement being the resealing of the 1,500m long runway and the other aircraft pavement areas.

As a result of GHD’s inspection of the aircraft pavements, it was confirmed that a hot bitumen reseal of the entire runway, taxiway and apron system was required. This work was specified by GHD to include a 14mm size 'correction' seal in areas of localised depression, to rectify the shape of the surface (prevent ponding), followed by a 10mm size hot bitumen seal to all the aircraft pavements. Following the 10mm seal, a special bitumen emulsion - sand seal (over spray) was specified to 'lock-in' and choke the voids between the aggregate particles in the new 10mm seal and prevent loose aggregate causing a FOD hazard to aircraft.

With the provision of heavier bitumen application rates, rolling with a steel drum roller and the addition of a bitumen emulsion - sand seal, Lockhart River airport's new sealed pavements appear uniformly flat and very 'full' of bitumen. The result is a very durable, completely FOD free surfacing with a long life expectancy.
